Long Term Goals and Strategies |
|
|
The LNS Society seeks to create a North Shore-wide, citizen-driven momentum that will be the most significant factor in accomplishing what will be recognized as one of the most sustainable communities in the world by 2020. This aligns with the stated vision of the municipalities on the North Shore and also addresses the real challenge of global processes such as climate change which require a timely response.
Legacy North Shore believes that key to the success of any community sustainability initiative is to first identify and leverage the existing good works of individuals and organizations in the community that are currently engaged in sustainability-related initiatives and/or that have a passion for sustainability. The North Shore is already home to an impressive array of individuals and organizations committed to advancing sustainability. These individuals and organizations in turn can broaden the awareness of residents as a whole of the need for sustainability and inspire them to become more actively engaged. With broad-based public support for sustainability in place, elected officials can make those necessary decisions that may require otherwise unpopular short-term investments that are critical to delivering long-term benefits. The Society has the following broad goals and strategies in support of this overarching outcome, a world-leading sustainable community: To engage citizens in the development of a vision of a sustainable North Shore
- convening forums and exchanges, at the individual level to the community-level
- develop report card on progress on North Shore sustainability
To support individual citizens in creating sustainable lifestyles and communities- baseline survey of North Shore citizens to collect data about their daily practices with regard to living sustainably
- develop web-based and audio-visual tools to change individual behaviour and attitudes
- general public awareness program, including regular coverage in community media (local newspapers, cable channel etc.)
To engage and support local institutions of all types in adopting policies and approaches that will support our community vision
- business case for sustainability and outreach to the business community
- support, advise, promote North Shore Sustainability Framework being developed by all three municipalities
- develop an outreach and engagement strategy for key sectors such as the business community, social services, arts, faith communities and environmental groups
To become a model for a future-focused community
- highlight and promote local sustainability success stories
- be a catalyst for developing concrete sustainability projects
- develop local ambassadors for sustainability
- extend our activities throughout the Sea-to-Sky corridor
- train local citizens and organizations to identify, analyze and effectively address opportunities to increase sustainability
