MEDIA RELEASE: Legacy North Shore Engages Municipal Candidates on Sustainability
21 OCTOBER 2008: North Shore residents concerned about the future sustainability of the North Shore are holding three all-candidates events in the run-up to the Nov 15th election.

Some of the province’s leading innovators who work nationally and internationally in social, economic and environmental arenas are banding together for this North Shore sustainability initiative. Legacy North Shore seeks to create a North Shore-wide, citizen-driven momentum that will be the most significant factor in accomplishing what will be recognized as one of the most sustainable communities in the world by 2020.

“The need for strong leadership and vision in our municipal governments has never been greater,” says Sabine Jessen, Legacy North Shore president and a national conservation leader. “The long-term health of our community requires change today if we want to continue enjoying a high-quality lifestyle in the future - and that means governments, especially local governments, must act boldly now.”

The North Shore will be faced with doing its share to accommodate some of the projected regional influx of 820,000 people over the next 25 year (Metro Vancouver November 2007 draft growth strategy). As well, without improved transportation, local opportunities and affordability will never be achievable.

At three events, one in each municipality, Legacy North Shore will be asking municipal candidates what they are prepared to do to foster the North Shore’s long-term environmental, social and economic well-being. Legacy North Shore sees the community’s fundamental wellbeing, socially and economically, is intertwined with the environment.

“They are inseparable,” says Julian Taylor, board member of Legacy North Shore, a clean technology consultant and entrepreneur. “How we choose and use our resources impacts the cost of business, the quality of the environment and our personal health – it’s not rocket science.”

Legacy North Shore will host the following all candidates meetings, which are open to the public:

Tuesday, October 28th 7-9pm – Hollyburn Elementary School, 1329 Duchess Avenue, District of West Vancouver – Moderated by former Mayor, Mark Sager

Saturday, November 1st 1-3pm - John Braithwaite Community Centre,145 West 1st Street, City of North Vancouver - Moderated by Charles Holmes

Wednesday, November 5th 7- 9pm - Halsall Associations Ltd, Suite 112-930 West 1st (across from Rona), District of North Vancouver - Moderated by Bob Purdy

Legacy North Shore is an independent, non-profit society working to foster broad-based and informed citizen engagement in support of a sustainable future for the North Shore and beyond.
