Julian Taylor - President

Julian is a professional engineer who has been working in the broad clean tech field for over 25 years in R&D, planning, operations and in general consulting, and has long been actively involved in energy technology strategy and policy matters at both provincial and federal levels. He is a past President of the Canadian Institute of Energy, has been a member of the BC Energy Council. From 2004 to 2007 he was Executive Director of the Power Technology Alliance and has worked closely with the Premier's Technology Council to shape energy technology policy recommendations. Julian has lived in West Vancouver for 27 years, where he and his wife raised three children. Julian is a founding director of LNSS.
Heather Fleming - Vice President

Heather Fleming has worked in community and leisure services for over 25 years, involved in parks management and partnerships, recreation development and planning, arts and cultural events, volunteerism capacity building and community development. Within Greater Vancouver, she has been a Recreation Director, Manager and Consultant, Manager for GVRD Parks and Parks Partnership Initiative, Project consultant for various parks, recreation and cultural projects and facilitator for various community processes. From 2004 to April 2008, Heather operated her own company called Innovative Project Solutions, working for the City of Richmond, Leadership Richmond and Volunteer BC building organizational capacity and a legacy of leaders. In her current work as the Manager of Volunteer Resources for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon, Heather oversee provincial-wide systems that supports the engagement and management of over 15,000 volunteers. Heather’s interest in sustainability action has been lifelong completing post Bachelor of Science degree studies in environmental science and practicing the principles of reducing, recycling and reusing in every day living. Heather is a founding director of LNSS.
Jak Redenbach - Treasurer
Jak Redenbach Architect – Architectural Counsel & Design

Jak Redenbach has been practicing architecture in British Columbia for over 25 years (www.redenbach.ca) serving local and international clients. He holds membership in the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the American Institute of Architects, and is a licensed member of the Architectural Institute of BC. As a resident of the District of North Vancouver, Jak served his community as chair on each of the Advisory Planning Commission, Advisory Design Panel, North Lonsdale Historic Area Review Committee, and the Design component of the Housing Issues Task Force. Broader community participation includes serving on UBC’s Deans’ Strategic Initiative Study Group, BCIT’s Advisory Group for the new degree of Bachelor of Technology in Architectural Science, the Board of Directors of the highly acclaimed BC Photography and Media Arts Society’s Presentation House Gallery located on the North Shore. He is a founding Director of the Legacy North Shore Society. In 2007 he was appointed to West Vancouver’s Rodgers Creek Area Plan Working Group mandated to facilitate sustainable development practices for the Upper Lands, initially consisting of a 215-acre parcel. His professional peers acknowledge Jak’s dedication. He was appointment Registrar of the Architectural Institute of BC for several years. As Registrar he supervised 300 intern architects in the post-grad Registration and Licensing Program, served as advisor to AIBC Council on matters of ethics and conflict of interest, and chaired the national RAIC Task Force on Interprovincial Firm Mobility for GATS Compliance and professional reciprocity. He assisted the Ontario Association of Architects in delivering Annual Conference continuing education. He is designated a “Fairness Advisor” by Partnerships BC. Jak has been a resident of the North Shore since 1971. His wife is a professor in UBC’s Faculty of Medicine, and they have 3 adult children. Jak is a founding director of LNSS.
Sabine Jessen - Past President
National Manager, Oceans and Great Freshwater Lakes Program, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society

Sabine was the original drive behind LNSS and pulled together the founding group. She has been active local citizen for over 6 years, serving on the District of North Vancouver’s Community Services Advisory Committee and running in the last municipal election for a council seat. Sabine is a founding director of LNS Society and convened the initial meetings that led to the establishment of LNS. Sabine has an undergraduate and Master’s degree in geography, specializing in resource, coastal and environmental management. She is delighted to be putting into practice the theory of social networking that was an underpinning of her PhD studies on land use planning in the Canadian Arctic. Over the past 17 years, Sabine has served in both volunteer and staff capacities with the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, including as the first Executive Director and Conservation Director of the BC chapter where much of her work has focused on conservation of Canada’s oceans. She is currently the national manager of the Oceans and Great Freshwater Lakes Program for CPAWS. Sabine has raised two daughters, now 22 and 17 on the North Shore where they have lived for the past 13 years, and can be found running with her dog Puck on seawall and the trails of the North Shore.
Kimberley Anthony

As a strategic planner and senior advisor with the Federal government, Kimberley has lead several national and regional resource management initiatives related to energy projects, oil and gas, and marine and ocean planning, working in consultation and negotiation with federal, provincial and municipal governments, coastal communities, academia, NGOs, industry and First Nations clients and stakeholders. Since relocating to BC, Kimberley is a true resident of the North Shore. She has resided in West Vancouver, the District of North Vancouver, and now makes the City of North Vancouver her home. She has served on the City’s Advisory Planning Commission for the last 3 years. Kimberley is a founding director of LNSS.
Belinda Spear
President, Metagnosis Consulting Inc.

Working for both Canadian and international governmental and private organisations Belinda has specialised in the field of Change Management, Communications and Stakeholder Engagement for over 14 years. She holds a Business Degree from Massey University, New Zealand. Belinda’s interest in sustainability led her to enrol in the Certificate of Sustainability at Royal Roads, which then led to her involvement in LNSS events over the past year. Coupled with her expertise in working with behaviourial change, Belinda is fulfilling her vision of using her knowledge and skills for the betterment of her local and wider community. Belinda, a “Caniwi”, has lived in several countries, but has called West Vancouver home for nearly 15 years.
David McLeod

David grew up on a farm in northern British Columbia in a family of nine children, large enough to support a baseball team. Within this context David learned his social skills and ingenuity for getting things accomplished. David learned at an early age, the sage advice, if the individual family members put the family needs before their own needs, all members will prosper. David has brought this same philosophy to our community and to his company, Angel Restoration Inc. David moved to Vancouver 38 years ago and ended on the North Shore 36 years ago. David started Angel Restoration Inc. 20 years ago; he very quickly included his family and continued to grow the company to the company it is today. The company has two offices, North Vancouver and Langley, with over 70 employees. The company also employees approximately the same number of people as sub trades. David is a tireless member of many associations in our community to name a few; North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, Seymour Community Association, Berkley Community Association, North Shore Business Success Group, High Output, CAP, Disaster Kleenup Canada, BC-STV, Federal Conservative Party, BC Homeopathic Society, Block Watch-Seymour, Legacy North Shore Society, BBB, Greater Vancouver Home Builders Association, Fraternal Order of Eagles, among others. Tom Walker and his spouse Susan are long-time North Vancouver single-salary tenants whose resulting interest in affordable housing alternatives include small spaces and co-housing. A bicycle commuter and advocate of active transportation while employed in the non-profit sector, Tom is currently engaged in realizing social legacies in sport, recreation and physical activity via the 2010 Winter Games. Tom and Susan have four children ranging from 10 to 30 years of age, and a one-year-old grand-dog, Zuzu.

JoAn Maurer

JoAn Maurer has loved the wilderness of mountains and oceans since growing up in Juneau, Alaska. She moved to North Shore 30 years ago and knew that this place was "home." She has worked as a consultant in career transition, organizational development, and team facilitation. Her current focus has been on helping organizations and individuals define and live their values. Her recent passion is teaching Dru Yoga on the north shore, giving people the tools to shift from external chaos to inner peace--and having fun moving and breathing! She has travelled internationally and has volunteered in West Africa and India. She completed the Ascent for Alzheimers of Mt Kilimanjaro in 2006. In her role at LNS she hopes to involve young people in defining their vision and values for a sustainable North Shore. One of her favourite projects was working with the Galiano Island School and community to develop an outdoor education experience on the ecology of humming birds. Other volunteer experience includes the Vancouver YWCA, Seva Canada, and Noetic Sciences.

David Thomson

David Thomson is an organizational development and leadership consultant and trainer (www.coastconsulting.ca) with a focus on leadership development, strategic planning, executive coaching, community engagement, sustainability, board governance, change management and team effectiveness.
In the private sector, David has worked with a variety of Fortune 500 clients in Canada, the United States, Europe and South America. In the non-profit sector, David was Outward Bound’s Executive Program Director, and for the past 10 years has consulted extensively with conservation non-profits from Alaska to Arizona. He holds a Master of Science in Organization Development degree from Pepperdine University, where he teaches as a School of Management adjunct faculty member, and an undergraduate B. Comm. He is also currently a Senior Associate with Training Resources for the Environmental Community and the 2-term National Board past-President of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, Canada’s largest grassroots conservation non-profit. David lives with his two young children, ages 8 and 11, in North Vancouver, where his wife is an emergency physician at Lions Gate Hospital. He is an avid skier, mountain biker, mountaineer and rock climber.
Charles Holmes

Charles Holmes is a facilitator and educator. For the past 18 years Charles has worked with a wide range of clients throughout North America, and South America, Asia, Saudi Arabia and Europe. He works primarily with Executive Teams and Boards of Directors on projects requiring input from multiple stakeholders.
Charles has been responsible for the design and development of numerous educational initiatives at Simon Fraser University, including the Executive Leadership Development Program. In 1999 he co-founded the Learning Strategies Group a unit in the faculty of business that specializes in developing customized educational programs for corporations. Charles has taught Executive Programs at both UBC and SFU for the past 15 years. His teaching interests and expertise are: leadership, negotiation and facilitation.
Charles and has lived with his wife and raised their two daughters on the North Shore since 1993 and envisions North Vancouver as a place that his family can live for generations to come.
Bob Purdy
Director, Corporate Development, Fraser Basin Council

Bob Purdy is Director, Corporate Development of the Fraser Basin Council, a unique non-profit organization helping people and organizations collaborate towards the long-term health of the Fraser Basin and the well being of its residents. Responsible for communications, strategic partnerships, fundraising and execution of the Council’s programs in the Greater Vancouver – Sea to Sky Region of the Basin, Mr. Purdy joined the Council in 1999 following several years of experience in the high technology industry, most recently with a Vancouver-based provider of software systems for environmental impact assessment and management. He has resided on the North Shore for the past 14 years and enjoys working with others in the community to ensure that it remains as one of the livable and sustainable communities anywhere.
