Vancouver’s North Shore is scaling new heights in sustainability
Peter ter Weeme February 3, 2009 8:42 PM I’m just back from a trip to Vietnam, a developing country that has seen economic growth of 8–9% for the past decade. During that time, the Vietnamese have diversified the economy, come to dominate several commodities and dramatically reduced poverty. If you imagine what the country looked like at the end of the Vietnam War, the country’s progress is all the more remarkable.

Cool North Shore 2009
Cool North Shore is community-focused initiative that brings North Shore residents together to do something now about global warming. At its heart is a goal to reduce the carbon footprint of participating individuals and institutions in a short period of time – our vision is “All North Shore residents, from Deep Cove to Lions Bay, taking action together, to create a low carbon community.”

Who We Are
Through our own deep and diverse experience in a range of sustainability-related topics, and through our extensive network on the North Shore and in the Lower Mainland, we can mobilize an impressive array of resources and expertise in support of accomplishing the above goals.

North Shore Issues
The North Shore is one of the most desirable areas of Metro Vancouver, and indeed all of Canada, in which to live. However, a number of issues are emerging that, if left unaddressed, will undermine its long-term social, economic and environmental well-being:
|
|
Geographic Area and Beneficiaries
Our initial focus is on the three North Shore municipalities: the City of North Vancouver, the District of North Vancouver and the District of West Vancouver. We may in the future consider increasing our geographical scope as we build capacity to also include citizens of Bowen Island and Lion’s Bay, if the interest is there to join our initiative.
|
|
Long Term Goals and Strategies
The LNS Society seeks to create a North Shore-wide, citizen-driven momentum that will be the most significant factor in accomplishing what will be recognized as one of the most sustainable communities in the world by 2020. This aligns with the stated vision of the municipalities on the North Shore and also addresses the real challenge of global processes such as climate change which require a timely response.
