Sustainability Voice

A key impetus for the formation of the Legacy North Shore Society, was a perceived need for a stronger sustainability perspective in the decisions affecting life in our community. Through this project we are seeking to engage local citizens to be active ambassadors for sustainability on the North Shore who will actively promote the principles and strategies for achieving sustainability in the three North Shore municipalities.

We have identified a number of key initiatives to provide opportunities for sustainability to become a key public issue in the North Shore communities, including:

  1. Actively engaging in the upcoming November 2008 municipal election, by convening all-candidates meetings in each municipality specifically on sustainability issues and encouraging our network of citizens to highlight sustainability issues at other all-candidates meetings;
  2. Ensuring that local citizens are presenting sustainability related issues and perspectives at regular council meetings; and
  3. Developing a presence on this issue with the local media.
In order to understand the extent to which the North Shore communities are currently achieving sustainability objectives, we are working with the North Shore foundations, the three municipalities and other interested organizations to develop a North Shore wide sustainability report card. We are currently in the process of examining other report card models like the Vancouver Foundation’s Vital Signs, and the Fraser Basin Council’s report card to guide us in the development of a report card tailored to North Shore needs.
